The Space Review

In the current issues of The Space Review, I spotted the following: John Logsdon looks at the recently uncovered tape from the Administration of John F. Kennedy talking about the space program. Tourists (and scientists) to the Moon? Stewart Money looks at the plans for Space Adventures to a Soyuz-based flyby to the Moon. Jeff Foust looks at one often-overlooked aspect of the space program: space art.

Look to the Future

Let me get this straight. We've shut down the shuttle, we've shut down Constellation, we have nothing to replace either being built (let alone a single plan), we have no firm plans for either low Earth orbit or beyond, we have no exploration plan period...and we're moving to a "...bright new future..."?

Is this guy shutting down the agency or what?
Crystal Rain

No, not the book by Tobias Buckell. "Crystal rain" spotted falling on an infant star.
Still Pretty Dry

Another discovery of water (in one form or the other) on the dry Moon. Still not quite ready to fill the swimming pool, but it is interesting to see how old samples are turning up new informatin. Even more of interest was the sample involved, the famous "orange soil" of Apollo 17.

Well Done, Thou Good and Faithful Rover

We've not heard from Spirit in a year. NASA has transitioned to single-rover operations on Mars. Seeing that the original "warranty" was for a three-month mission, Spirit performed well above and beyond its designed performance!

Sample Return

NASA is planning to send a robotic vehicle to an asteroid in 2016 to pluck a sample for return to Earth.

Train to Fight, Fight to Win

Tom Kratman; Countdown: The Liberators (Baen Books; February 2011; ISBN 978-1-4391-3402-3; cover by Kurt Miller)

Tom Kratman is no stranger to this blog, I've mentioned him and his books (and even serialized a few chapters from his most recent, The Amazon Legion) here.

Countdown: The Liberators is different from most of his books (other than A State of Disobedience) as it is not "science fiction". Well, it might be science fiction in the sense that, say, Tom Clancy or Howard Coyle, is "science fiction", possibly, maybe, barely in the future. Call it a technothriller. Or maybe milporn.

The son of a chief in Africa is kidnapped and held so that one tribe gains power over another. A group of former (mostly forcibly retired) members of the U.S. military are approached and offered large sums of money in order to rescue the son. A organization is built, trained and causes much mayhem on the sea and land in the course of the rescue. Cue explosions and get ready for the next installment.

Well, I'm being slightly silly. Seeing that I kept restraining myself, knowing that the sequel was not ready, I did enjoy the read. Kratman improves with each book in terms of pacing, character and overall quality of writing. For milporn (is that even a term?), it is pretty good milporn. Kratman introduces several people that I'd like to read about again, including a South African couple and a Israeli tank commander. And we get to see some interesting weapons and vehicles (can this group make good out of a T55?).

As with A Desert Called Peace, Carnifax, The Lotus Eaters and The Amazon Legion, Kratman uses the book to drive home an important point about military life: train to fight, fight to win (actually, we used to say something different, but that would not be, ahem, politically correct). So, Countdown: The Liberators has certain similarities with, say A Desert Called Peace (building a military organization), but that is because nobody (but a few crazed readers, such as myself) would buy a non-fiction work on training. Hopefully, by osmosis, some of the "lessons learned" will sink into those who are in the field via a fun read.

Now for the next one (still forthcoming)! Link to electronic edition found here, also available as a mass market paperback via your usual suspects (might be shelved in "fiction" as well as the genre shelves).

Oh, The Humanity

My (maternal) grandfather worked for The Daily News as a linotype operator. On the last flight, the Hindenburg flew over NYC before heading down to Lakehurst, everybody streamed out of the building to see it. Shortly after they had one of those "stop the presses" moments.

Number 286. Gotta Collect Them All

April shows bring May's issue of Ansible!

Without Comment. A 'Sci-Fi and Fantasy Friendly Church Service' near Melbourne, encouraging fans to come in costume and hear moral lessons drawn from The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Star Wars, was frowned on by a rival pastor: '"I don't have a problem with people enjoying sci-fi, but church isn't the place to encourage escapism and fancy dress," Mentone Baptist minister Murray Campbell said.' (Herald Sun, Australia, 6 April) [PB]
Grand Master

Stuck in the back of The Ghost Light are two obituaries on Fritz Leiber, one from The New York Times and one from Locus. Did he really pass away in 1992? It seems both just yesterday and so long ago. Just yesterday because he is one of my favorites and many of his stories have had a great impact upon me. Long ago because his books have faded from the shelves other than a couple of recent collections and an occasional reprint of the tales of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.

Ah, me. Time for a visit with one of my favorites. Maybe this will spark some interest out there!

Fritz Leiber; The Ghost Light (Berkley; 1984; ISBN 0-425-06812-9; cover byJohn Jude Palencar).

An excellent collection on several fronts. Great selection of stories (I only miss a few entries such as Catch That Zeppelin! and A Pail of Air, plus maybe Ill Met in Lankhmar instead of Bazaar of the Bizarre to make this a better set), plus superb artwork: folks, if you can find this book as an illustrated edition, and as a trade paperback instead of a mass market paperback (the better to appreciate the author photograph in the beginning, of Fritz Leiber in front of a bookstore filled with items from the collection), I urge you to do so. This book was an early production by Byron Preiss and is one of the best results of that now-lost publishing effort. The stories represent some of Leiber's best efforts and represent entries into each of his series (unless I'm forgetting, as it has been a number of years, only the Change War series is not represented) or attempted series (unless memory is incorrect, I seem to recall Leiber writing descriptions in previous collections where he said both A Pail of Air, also not represented here, and Coming Attraction would have been parts of serial works). Topping off the collection is a long autobiograpical essay, amusing and interesting, and making one wish that Leiber had done a book-length version of his life.

There seems to be two themes to the stories in the book. The themes apply to most, if not all of the stories. The first is that each story is inspired by some sort of ordinary-seeming object. A night light. A mask. A chess set. A store full of odds and ends. For the second, the characters are haunted by real or imagined ghosts.

The Ghost Light opens the collection with a short work about a family visiting the estranged father of the main character and attempting a reconciliation. The father is a recovering alcoholic who lost his wife several years ago. Mystery grows as it is revealed that he may have played a role...passive or aggressive...in her death. Toss in a couple of night lights, some paintings, and a storm and you get a tale that equals anything written by Tim Powers or Neil Gaiman. Magical realism, indeed.

Coming Attraction is equally creepy. New York City, after World War III with the stump of the Empire State Building dominating the landscape (it seemed to have made off better than the World Trade Center with a smaller attack). Women wear masks to give themselves an air of mystery (or to cover up burns and mutations), wrestling dominates the airwaves (hey, is this science fiction or the SyyyyyFyyyyy Channel?). Leiber was often writing about sex and our fascination with sex and this is one of his takes on the subject. And a scary tale as well.

A Deskful of Girls explores Leiber's fascination (fear?) of sex. A famous psychologist is removing ghosts from various female clients. The main character is sent to try to recover what he thinks is blackmail material, but finds something quite different.

I recall reading Space-Time for Springers in its first appearance, so this might be my earliest encounter with Leiber along with A Pail of Air. Gummitch is a superkitten, but only he seems to know it.

Four Ghosts in Hamlet ties Leiber's own experiences on the stage into a fascinating horror story. Or is it? Was there a "real" ghost during the performance of That Play? One of my favorites by him.
