2009: The Year in Current Reads

The other night, my wife, my daughter and I were comparing the number of books we are simultaneously reading. For my wife and daughter, if was four or five books; but for me, I guessed I was reading between thirty-five and fifty books.

I've always been able to do this, don't know why. I can juggle multiple plotlines or non-fiction threads. I can put a book down for days, weeks or months (even years) and pick it up again without a problem. Don't know how...

Anyway, here's a fairly complete list (without pulling off layers from the bookshelves to scan all the titles) of what I'm currently (more or less currently) reading. In looking at the non-fiction, can you discern what I'd like to be doing now?

Hopefully this will be constantly modified, as I finish titles or remember what else I'm reading.

Just one classic after another, particularly in the H portion of the list.

I assume the Niven-Pournelle titles are re-reads. Hard to imagine you'd have gotten this far without reading The Mote in God's Eye.

There's at least one guy in the "H" section that might be a flash in the pan. We'll see. Of course, I'm talking about Herodotus here!

The Niven-Pournelle titles or the Pournelle solos and the Niven solos are re-reads, in some cases, for the first time in decades.

The edition of "Mote" that I've got is a "restored" edition with a couple of chunks added back in by the authors. We still don't have the pre-Heinlein edit version (I don't think it exists anymore), but it is closer to what it was. It is amusing to think that it was cut for being too long...and then you look at the Peter Hamilton tomes where they were so big that single books were cut in two by American publishers because they couldn't print the single books!

"Footfall" and "Lucifer's Hammer" I wanted to re-read upon learning that originally "Footfall" was being written, then their agent said to drop the aliens, so they wrote "Hammer", then eventually went back and wrote "Footfall".

I still owe you that "books that stick with you piece". Someday, someday...
